VAT Calculator — Add or Remove VAT Instantly

Free online VAT calculator for Saudi Arabia (15%), UAE (5%), Egypt (14%) and any custom rate. Enter a net or gross price and instantly see the VAT amount in both directions: add VAT to a net price, or extract VAT from a gross price.

Value Added Tax (VAT) is now the dominant indirect tax across the Middle East and North Africa. Saudi Arabia charges 15%, the UAE charges 5%, Egypt charges 14%, Bahrain charges 10%, Oman charges 5%, and Jordan applies a general sales tax of 16%. Qatar and Kuwait have not yet introduced VAT, but their businesses still meet it whenever they buy from or sell to VAT-registered businesses next door. The Xuvilo VAT calculator handles every one of these cases in one tool.

You can use it in two directions. Add VAT to a net price when you are quoting a customer or building a price list and you only have the pre-tax figure. Extract VAT from a gross price when a customer hands you a VAT-inclusive total and you need the net amount and the VAT portion separately for your bookkeeping or for issuing a tax invoice. Both directions are exactly one click apart, and both show you the full breakdown so you can copy the numbers straight into your accounting tool or invoice.

Why bother with a calculator at all? Because working VAT out in the wrong direction is one of the most common errors on small-business invoices in the region. Taking 15% of a VAT-inclusive total instead of extracting it gives SAR 172.50 of VAT on SAR 1,150, where the right figure is SAR 150, and the mistake is almost invisible until the customer's accounts team rejects the invoice. Checking the split here before you issue the invoice catches the mistake before your customer's accounts team does.

"Tax" in the MENA region is not one number. It is a stack: VAT on every sale (15% Saudi, 5% UAE, 14% Egypt), corporate income tax on profits (recently introduced at 9% in the UAE, 22.5% in Egypt, 20% on Saudi non-GCC entities), and withholding tax on cross-border services and royalties (0% in the UAE, 5-20% in Saudi Arabia, 20% in Egypt before any treaty relief). Getting any one of them wrong on an invoice, a payslip or an annual filing creates compounding problems with the tax authority. The Xuvilo calculator handles the first of them, VAT, and this guide explains the other two.

The calculator adds VAT to a net amount or extracts it from a gross one, at whatever rate you type, and shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross total. It does not calculate corporate income tax or withholding tax: those depend on thresholds, exemptions and treaties that a single-rate tool cannot capture, so confirm them with your accountant. The questions below give the headline rules.

Use the calculator before quoting a customer or issuing a tax invoice. Five seconds of checking here saves weeks of back-and-forth with the tax authority later.

How to Use

  1. Enter the amount: the net price if you are adding VAT, or the VAT-inclusive total if you are extracting it.
  2. Enter the VAT rate for the sale — 15 for Saudi Arabia, 5 for the UAE, 14 for Egypt, 10 for Bahrain — or 0 for a zero-rated supply.
  3. Choose Add VAT (exclusive) or Extract VAT (inclusive).
  4. Click Calculate to see the net amount, the VAT amount and the gross amount.

Key figures and context

How It Works

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

Extract VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

VAT = Gross − Net

Example

$1,000 + 15% VAT = $1,150. Extracting VAT from $1,150 at 15% → net $1,000, VAT $150.

Frequently asked questions

Which MENA countries charge VAT, and at what rates?

Saudi Arabia 15%, the UAE 5%, Egypt 14%, Bahrain 10% and Oman 5%. Jordan levies a general sales tax of 16% instead of VAT. Qatar and Kuwait have signed the GCC's common VAT framework but have not yet introduced VAT. Rates and exemptions change, so confirm the current rate with each country's tax authority before you invoice.

What is the standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

15%, in force since 1 July 2020, when it rose from 5%. It applies to most goods and services. Exports are zero-rated, and a few supplies, such as residential rent and some financial services, are exempt. ZATCA, the Saudi tax authority, publishes the rules for each category.

What is the difference between output VAT and input VAT?

Output VAT is the VAT you charge on your sales; input VAT is the VAT you pay on your business purchases. Each VAT return pays the difference: your output VAT minus the input VAT you can reclaim, and reclaiming it needs a valid tax invoice from each supplier. Input VAT on costs that relate to exempt supplies cannot be reclaimed.

How often do Saudi businesses file VAT returns?

Monthly if your taxable supplies in the previous twelve months exceeded SAR 40 million, and quarterly otherwise. That is the tax period the VAT Implementing Regulations set.

Can I charge VAT before I am registered?

No. In Saudi Arabia, issuing a tax invoice while not registered is a violation, with a fine of up to SAR 100,000 on ZATCA's list of VAT fines. Register first, and charge VAT only from your registration date. On every quotation and invoice, say whether prices are VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive, so nobody has to guess.

How do I correct the VAT on an invoice I have already issued?

Issue a credit or debit note that refers to the original invoice, and never edit or delete the invoice itself. The note adjusts the VAT; in Saudi Arabia it is an electronic document under the same e-invoicing rules as the invoice.

How is VAT rounded on a Saudi invoice?

The VAT amount is shown in riyals and halalas and rounded to the nearest halala, and the rounded figures must be the ones you use in your VAT return.

Do exports need a tax invoice?

Yes. In Saudi Arabia a tax invoice must be issued for all goods exported from the Kingdom, whatever their value and whoever the customer, stating that the supply is an export, with VAT at 0%.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

5%, since VAT was introduced on 1 January 2018. Exports outside the GCC, international transport and some education and healthcare services are zero-rated. Some financial services, residential property after its first supply, bare land and local passenger transport are exempt.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At the UAE's 5%, AED 1,000 net becomes 1,000 × 1.05 = AED 1,050, of which AED 50 is VAT. Choose Add VAT (exclusive) and the calculator does this for you.

How do I extract VAT from a VAT-inclusive total?

Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate to get the net, then subtract the net from the gross to get the VAT. At Saudi Arabia's 15%, SAR 1,150 is 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000 net and SAR 150 VAT. A common mistake is to take 15% of the gross instead, which gives SAR 172.50 and overstates the VAT. Choose Extract VAT (inclusive) and the calculator does it in one step. Two more: a SAR 230 restaurant bill is SAR 200 before VAT and SAR 30 VAT; a SAR 4,599 shelf price is SAR 3,999.13 before VAT and SAR 599.87 VAT.

Is VAT charged on exports?

Exports of goods and services outside the GCC are generally zero-rated: VAT is charged at 0%, so the buyer pays none, but the seller can still reclaim the input VAT on related costs. Each country sets conditions, such as keeping proof of export, so check them with your tax adviser.

Do I need to issue a tax invoice, and what must it show?

If you are VAT-registered, yes: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Bahrain and Oman all require a tax invoice for taxable sales, with a simplified invoice allowed for some sales to consumers. A full tax invoice shows at least the seller's VAT number, the date, the taxable amount, the VAT rate and amount, and the total. Xuvilo's invoice generator has a field for each of these, and for Saudi sellers it can add ZATCA's Phase 1 QR code.

What taxes does a UAE small business pay?

Corporate tax at 9% on taxable profit above AED 375,000, and 0% below it, for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023; a business with revenue of up to AED 3 million can elect small business relief for tax periods ending by 31 December 2026. VAT at 5%, with registration mandatory above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies a year and voluntary from AED 187,500. Withholding tax on payments to non-residents is set at 0%. A qualifying free-zone company can pay 0% corporate tax on qualifying income if it meets the conditions.

What taxes does a Saudi small business pay?

VAT at 15%, with registration mandatory once taxable sales pass SAR 375,000 a year and voluntary from SAR 187,500. Profits are taxed by ownership: the share owned by Saudi and other GCC nationals pays zakat at about 2.5% of the zakat base, and the share owned by others pays 20% corporate income tax. Payments to non-residents carry withholding tax — for example 15% on royalties and 5% on technical and consulting services.

What is withholding tax and when does it apply?

Withholding tax is deducted by the payer from a payment to a non-resident and paid to the tax authority on the recipient's behalf. It typically applies to royalties, management and technical fees, dividends and interest paid abroad. Rates depend on the country and may be reduced by a tax treaty: Egypt's domestic rate on many such payments is 20%. The supplier usually invoices the gross amount and the payer deducts the tax when paying. This calculator does not work out withholding tax; confirm the rate with your accountant.

Can I use this calculator for a Saudi tax invoice with a ZATCA QR code?

This calculator computes the VAT amounts an invoice must display. The Xuvilo invoice generator then produces a tax invoice carrying ZATCA's Phase 1 QR code — the TLV payload with seller name, VAT number, timestamp, total and VAT amount — as an A4 PDF in the language you are using Xuvilo in; use it in Arabic for a Saudi tax invoice, because ZATCA requires Arabic. It does not produce the signed XML that Phase 2 requires, and does not clear or report invoices through ZATCA's Fatoora platform. If ZATCA has notified you of your integration wave, you need an integrated provider for those invoices.
