How businesses in Nigeria invoice and get paid

To keep an invoice moving, put your tax identification number (TIN) on it, quote the client's purchase order number, and finish the client's supplier onboarding before you deliver. State your payment terms and the due date, and give your account name, account number and bank so the client can pay by bank transfer. Send the invoice to the client's accounts payable team as well as your contact, and follow up on the due date.

What's on every Nigeria invoice

How to create a Nigeria invoice in three steps

Step 1. Open the Nigeria invoice generator. Currency and tax are pre-loaded for you. Fill in your business details and logo; signed in, the company profile you save under Settings fills them in for you.

Step 2. Add your customer and your line items. Quantity, unit price and tax update the totals automatically. Switch language between Arabic & English as needed; Xuvilo flips the layout to RTL or LTR for you.

Step 3. Click "Download PDF". Your Nigeria invoice is generated as a print-ready A4 file in NGN, ready to email to the client or attach to your accounting system.

Tax in Nigeria

Nigeria applies 7.5% VAT on most invoiced goods and services, so Xuvilo defaults the tax rate to 7.5% VAT on the Nigeria invoice. You can override the rate per line, exclude exempt items, or add multiple tax components if your business requires it.

The tax authority responsible for Nigeria is NRS (Nigeria Revenue Service), which replaced the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, signed in June 2025. From 1 January 2026, a small business with annual turnover of 100 million naira or less and total fixed assets of no more than 250 million naira is exempt from charging VAT under the 2025 tax reform laws, and may choose to opt out of the exemption; the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 leaves businesses that provide professional services out of that definition. Before that, the Finance Act 2019 exempted businesses with turnover below 25 million naira. Check your own position with the NRS.

E-invoicing rules in Nigeria

Nigeria's e-invoicing platform, the Merchant Buyer Solution, is run by the NRS. The NRS says all registered businesses and any entity transacting in or from Nigeria are required to use its e-invoicing system, and that it is introducing e-invoices in stages. Check with the NRS which stage applies to your business and from when. Xuvilo produces a PDF invoice and does not connect to the platform.

Beyond invoices — quotations and receipts for Nigeria

Xuvilo isn't only an invoice generator. The same business profile powers a free quotation generator for sending price quotes before a deal is signed, a free receipt generator for confirming payments after they're made, and a 859 template library for industry-specific designs. Most Nigeria businesses go through quote → invoice → receipt for every project, and Xuvilo covers all three.

Frequently Asked Questions — Nigeria

What VAT rate do I charge on invoices in Nigeria?

The standard VAT rate in Nigeria is 7.5%, raised from 5% by the Finance Act 2019, which was signed in January 2020. It appears as a separate line on tax invoices. From 1 January 2026, a small business (turnover of 100 million naira or less and fixed assets of no more than 250 million naira, professional services excluded) is exempt from charging VAT unless it opts out, and basic food, education services and materials, and pharmaceutical products are zero-rated. Check your own position with the NRS.

Is e-invoicing mandatory in Nigeria?

The NRS says all registered businesses and any entity transacting in or from Nigeria are required to use its e-invoicing system, the Merchant Buyer Solution, and that it is introducing e-invoices in stages. Check with the NRS which stage applies to you and from when. Xuvilo produces a PDF invoice and does not connect to the platform.

Can I invoice foreign clients in USD from Nigeria?

Xuvilo lets you issue the invoice in US dollars or in any of its other currencies. Agree the invoice currency with your client before you start, and ask your accountant how to report income you receive in foreign currency.

Is withholding tax deducted from my invoices?

Some clients deduct withholding tax when they pay an invoice, so the amount you receive can be less than the total. From 1 January 2026, small companies are exempt from having withholding tax deducted from their income, and from deducting it on their payments to suppliers. The rates for other businesses depend on the kind of payment, so check them with the NRS or your accountant.

What payment details should a Nigerian invoice show?

Your account name, account number and bank name, so the client can pay by bank transfer, with the due date and your payment terms.

Yes. During our launch phase every core tool is free, with no sign-up and no payment details: create as many invoices, quotations and receipts as you need and download them as PDFs. Paid plans are coming soon, and the Pricing page shows what the Free plan will include once they launch.

Can I export to PDF?

Yes, all documents export instantly as professional A4 PDFs ready to print or share by email.
