How businesses in Ghana invoice and get paid

Mobile money is the backbone of Ghanaian payments — MTN MoMo dominates, alongside Telecel Cash and AT Money — and it is entirely normal to put a MoMo number on an invoice next to bank details. Corporate clients pay by bank transfer through GhIPSS rails, and cheques still circulate among older established firms in Accra and Kumasi. The controversial E-Levy on electronic transfers, introduced in 2022, was abolished in 2025, removing a friction that had pushed some payments back to cash. Invoices quote amounts in Ghana cedis, though the levies stacked on top of VAT (NHIL, GETFund and COVID-19 levy) make the effective tax on an invoice roughly 21-22%, which regularly surprises new freelancers.

Why Ghana businesses choose Xuvilo

What's on every Ghana invoice

How to create a Ghana invoice in three steps

Step 1. Open the Ghana invoice generator. Currency and tax are pre-loaded for you. Fill in your business details and logo; signed in, the company profile you save under Settings fills them in for you.

Step 2. Add your customer and your line items. Quantity, unit price and tax update the totals automatically. Switch language between Arabic & English as needed; Xuvilo flips the layout to RTL or LTR for you.

Step 3. Click "Download PDF". Your Ghana invoice is generated as a print-ready A4 file in GHS, ready to email to the client or attach to your accounting system.

Tax in Ghana

Ghana applies 15% VAT on most invoiced goods and services, so Xuvilo defaults the tax rate to 15% VAT on the Ghana invoice. You can override the rate per line, exclude exempt items, or add multiple tax components if your business requires it.

The tax authority responsible for Ghana is GRA (Ghana Revenue Authority). VAT registration is mandatory once taxable turnover exceeds GHS 200,000 over a 12-month period — verify the current threshold with the GRA, as it is periodically revised.

E-invoicing rules in Ghana

Ghana operates the GRA E-VAT system, under which VAT-registered taxpayers must issue invoices through a GRA Certified Invoicing System that transmits data to the authority in real time. The rollout began with large taxpayers in October 2022 and has been extending in phases to medium and small taxpayers. If you are VAT-registered, verify with the GRA which onboarding phase applies to you.

Beyond invoices — quotations and receipts for Ghana

Xuvilo isn't only an invoice generator. The same business profile powers a free quotation generator for sending price quotes before a deal is signed, a free receipt generator for confirming payments after they're made, and a 859 template library for industry-specific designs. Most Ghana businesses go through quote → invoice → receipt for every project, and Xuvilo covers all three.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ghana

What is the real VAT charge on a Ghanaian invoice?

The headline VAT rate is 15%, but invoices also carry the 2.5% NHIL, 2.5% GETFund levy and 1% COVID-19 levy, which are calculated on the base and then VAT applies on top. The combined effective rate works out to roughly 21.9%, so always itemise the levies separately as the GRA format requires.

Do I need to use the GRA E-VAT system?

If you are VAT-registered, yes — Ghana requires VAT invoices to be issued through a GRA Certified Invoicing System, rolled out in phases since 2022. Non-VAT-registered freelancers below the threshold can issue ordinary invoices, but should confirm their obligations with the GRA.

Can Ghanaian freelancers invoice foreign clients in USD?

Yes, invoicing overseas clients in USD, GBP or EUR is common, with funds received via bank transfer or platforms like Payoneer and Wise before conversion to cedis. Domestic invoices should be in GHS, and the cedi's history of depreciation means many exporters convert promptly on receipt.

Is it acceptable to accept mobile money for business invoices in Ghana?

Completely — MTN MoMo is so ubiquitous that many small businesses list a MoMo merchant number as their primary payment method on invoices. With the E-Levy scrapped in 2025, mobile money is again the cheapest rail for small-value business payments in Ghana.

Is Xuvilo free?

Yes. During our launch phase every core tool is free, with no sign-up and no payment details: create as many invoices, quotations and receipts as you need and download them as PDFs. Paid plans are coming soon, and the Pricing page shows what the Free plan will include once they launch.

Can I export to PDF?

Yes, all documents export instantly as professional A4 PDFs ready to print or share by email.

Does it support Arabic and English?

Yes. Switch Xuvilo between Arabic (right to left) and English (left to right) at any time; each document prints in one language: Arabic when you are using Xuvilo in Arabic or have chosen an Arabic template, English otherwise; and every field accepts text in either language.
